windows 8 old start menu

If you already trying Windows Developer Preview you may noticed Microsoft has removed the old start menu and replacing it with the Metro Start Button.

Some people dislike the new metro start menu and this is how to enable back the old start button so it behaves a lot like Windows 7 start menu.

Download ViStart

vistart windows 8

ViStart is a tiny program to enable Windows 7 start menu and originally created for Windows XP users that wanting the same exact start menu as Windows 7. Vistart will sit on top of the new metro start menu in Windows 8.

However you can still use the metro start menu by hovering at the bottom left corner. So you may use both the new metro start menu and also old start menu by using ViStart.

Edit : Here is a registry tweak that enable the old start menu back and does not require third party program such as Vistart.

windows8 018

Enter regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > RPEnabled > Change from value 1 to 0.

Eventually the old start menu is back and you can still use metro start button by hovering at the bottom left corner.

I’m a desktop user and after a few hours on Windows 8 I’m already having a hard time in 7. The classic start menu is a little tricky when u think about it, when windows 8 is just all there, laid out on one (scrollable) screen.
