How to run Android 2.3 gingerbread on VMware/VirtualBox
1. You must have VMware or VirtualBox installed. Use either one as the steps are nearly identical. Download VirtualBox here and VMware Player here (free @softpedia).
2. Download live cd Android 2.3 daily build from http://mariuz.android-dev.ro/
3. Download the correct version; for example if you Eee PC download the Android Eee version. For other laptop or PCs download the generic version. The specific android version are build to support the computer hardware.
4. Run VMware or VirtualBox. Create new virtual hard disk and select the downloaded Android iso.
5. Set the virtual machine name and the location. For example Android 2.3 x86.
6. Set the virtual hard disk size. 1 gig of space is more than enough.
7. Virtual Machine should be ready.
8. You may customize the hardware. Set the ram to 512 MB (recommended ) , enable 3D graphics and enable USB support. For network connector can select between NAT or Bridged. The virtual machine will use the current internet connection of your computer.
9. Or if you add the iso manually you can select Linux (2.6 kernel 32 bit) and choose the android live cd iso file.
10. Run the virtual machine, Android will show selection of boot option.
11. Select Live CD – run android x86 without installation if you want to try first.
12. Now Android is launched and ready for use on your VMware or virtualbox.
13. The Android version is 2.3.4 (latest build as of 6 July 2011).
14. Android is build for touchscreen but in this version you can use mouse and keyboard to navigate. Use arrow key to navigate the icons and right click mouse to open apps and left click mouse to back.
15. You can try to run default apps and probably third party app works fine too.
The steps are easy and should works fine on most computer as Android only use a little resources. It would be great if you wanted to try how Android looks like and works.

Hello
Thanks for this guide I was able to install it on Oracle VM VirtualBox without problems BUT I am facing another problem… First I tried to install .apk files from the web (from a local http server) but it kept telling me I need an sdcard to do so. I managed to make it work by mounting an sd card and adding to Vbox’s devices. I installed some games but when I tried to play them it kept telling me that the applications crashed.
Do you maybe know why this is happening and how to solve this problem? I want to run some games in order to record the screen (make videos of them).
Thanks

I haven’t tried yet running games on this android x86 but from what I heard the compatibilities is bad due to virtual machine unable to utilize host computer graphics properly…may I know which build that you use? Is it eeepc or generic build?
I’ll take a look at them if I have time. OK

Hi Antonis, would you please explain in a little more detail how you managed to have the SD card attached? I am not able to make it work unfortunately. I tried with creating a block device and mention that as option in the boot menu line, but no luck.
Thanks

Hello Quelque and sorry for my late reply.
I just entered an SD card in my computer and enabled it from VBox’s Devices menu (from menubar). It was like mounting an SD card in a phone or pad..
